MIXED MEDIA ARTIST
Painting | Collage | Assemblage
I’m Mary Alice, but I go by my initials, M.A. – it’s just a simpler approach. I’ve work in mixed media, collage and assemblage for about 15 years. I’ve been a jewelry maker and photographer, and have long collected folk art, unique objects and interesting images throughout my life. I was active with the Denver Art Students League for many years and I now belong to a mixed media art collective here in Indiana. My work has a narrative quality where I tell you stories in images that are to be uncovered and discovered, rewritten and re-interpreted. These stories weave atmospheric feelings and provocative details in a juxtaposition of celestial ideology and the mundane world, the sublime to the ridiculous, in a creative process that thrives in the present moment. At times, my works reference my more than 20-year practice of Tibetan Buddhism, which supports my world-view and personal philosophies. I think that my chosen media are special because they free me to be courageous, gritty and experimental – the things I have always wanted for my life.
